After taking action against online casino operators and blocking Internet Ports it seems that the Italian government has had a change of heart. From recent news we learn that Italy is about to adopt a regulatory and taxation regime similar to the one that the United Kingdom will institute. Starting January 1, 2007, Italian citizens will be able to play at online casino sites legally. The Italian government aims at taxing the online casino industry and forming a relationship with the gambling community.

Back in February, the Italian government was less enthusiastic about its citizens playing at online casino sites, and took measures aimed at banning the Internet Ports of over 600 online casino sites that were available for the Italian public. Reports from that time indicated that the Italian government tried to form some sort of a business relationship with one of the online casino poker rooms, but the deal did not go through. It seems that the economic potential of the online gambling industry has caused the Italian government to re-evaluate the situation.

Forming an economic relationship with the online casino gambling industry is something that many governments are looking into. Taxing online casino operations will yield a great return for the country, and will also prevent local currency from being used and transferred to other countries. Hopefully, this turn of events will effect other European government to adopt the United Kingdom’s future approach to online casino gambling, and maybe at some point, the United States will also realize the potential in such system.
